Colombia the author analyses some of the important features of the current violence in relation to the violent upheavals in the society during the decade of the Fifties. The present situation is aggravated by the sheer magnitude of the drug trade, by the various actors involved, and by the illegal economic resources available. Given this scenario it is concluded that the outcome should be a definite commitment to serious negotiations, or alternatively the conflict will soon become a full scale civil war.
