People who value species for non direct uses of consumption can interact with extractors of these species in order to determine their economic allocation. Based on game theory, this paper builds up a model that explicitly embodies this interaction and allows an analysis of equilibrium outcomes in which the concerned agents make decisions upon the rules of behavior. It is shown that, under some conditions, a sustainable use of the species is possible, with the proviso that people who value them unconditionally decide to participate in their protection.
